Image © Wendy Filener THREE BLACK FROGFISH ON PIER These three guys are called "giant frogfish", and indeed, they were quite simply enormous! Two were jet-black, and the third was one red and white patterned. They can apparently change color completely in a matter of days. Each one was about 18 inches across (even accounting for the underwater magnification). They allowed us to get right up to them and snap off a couple of shots. We were directly under the busy, main pier in Ambon, and the guides say they are always there. The ferry parked for awhile, less than 20 feet over the top of our heads, and the engine noise was deafening. However, they didn't seem a bit disturbed by it - it must be like having an apartment next door to LAX. |
