Image © Wendy Filener BLUE RIBBON EEL (Male) These are fascinating, gorgeous little eels that start out black with a yellow stripe. They are hermaphrodites, and the males are blue with a yellow stripe (like this one). Once they reach a certain size, they all become yellow and female (I am told the females are quite rare). I had seen Blue Ribbon Eels in Fiji, where they were terribly shy, and couldn't get any decent shots. But this guy didn't seem to mind the camera a bit. There was also, amazingly, a yellow ribbon eel not far from this one (on the dive site Laha), but my battery had died by then. Bummer! |
