Image © Cindy Abgarian FLATHEAD FISH Part of the Platycephalidae family, flatheads are similar to flounders in that their eyes, being on the top of their heads, provide them with binocular vision enabling them to see, and attack, overhead prey. They use their elongated, flat body, camouflaged color and structure to their advantage by hiding in the sand, with only eyes visible. They strike upwards and outwards at their preferred diet of small fish and prawns. Fortunately their eyes are caught in a divers' flashlight beam, glow a bit, aiding in detection. |
