Image © Cindy Abgarian YELLOW (FEMALE) RIBBON EEL The Blue ribbon eel, Rhinomuraena quaesita, is a species of moray eels that lives in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Ranging up to 36 inches in length ,and with up to a 20 year life span, it is the only member of the Moray Eel family that is not gonochoristic - that is, a sexually reproducing species where there are two distinct sexes. Starting out life as a black in color juvenile, as it matures into adulthood as a male, the vibrant Blues with yellow trim appear. Should the eel enter the female gender, it then once again enters a new color phase, this time turning a pleasing yellow color. Although noted for being one of the most social and docile of the eel family, nonetheless, when approached by a underwater photographer, with a rather large housed SLR, strobes aflashing, it can become easily spooked into retreating into its burrow. |
