REEF MANTIS SHRIMP
Odontodactylus scyllarus

This colorful member of the stomapod family is referred to as a "smasher". It uses it's club-like appendages to smash and crush its prey, notably crabs and other snail- like creatures. In addition to delivering one of the fastest strikes in the animal kingdom, its force has been likened to that of a small caliber bullet. It has the worlds most complex retina possessing the capacity for distinguishing up to 100,000 colors, compared to us humans seeing a mere 10,000.

Living in coral and hard substrate, divers should beware of this pugnacious , aggressive creature when striving for that close up macro shot. Given the fact they have been known to break aquarium double layered safety glass, the underwater photographer might well be left trying to explain to his/her insurance company why they need a replacement dome port.
